In this research a Geographic Information System (GIS) is constructed using data on firms and businesses located in the municipality of Pesaro, Marche, Italy. Pesaro is a mid-sized town, characterized by a remarkable industrial district – furniture manufacturing – and tourism. Combining economic evaluations with descriptive statistics and sectorial mapping, the spatial location of firms is analysed throughout the paper. The spatial analysis is then deepened by means of advanced techniques such as the Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) and the Ripley’s K. The paper follows the path of modern cartography – intended as a tool of analysis rather than a mere representation of reality – and contributes to the existing literature. The results show how sectors tend to cluster unlikely, with significant distributional differences. The observed differences are explained mainly by the characteristics of firms, such as dimension and the sector of activity. The results are interesting to policy makers and local administrators for urban planning, industrial policy, economic development strategy and marketing

Finite energy solutions for nonlinear elliptic equations with competing gradient, singular and L1L^1 terms

    In this paper we deal with the following boundary value problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -\Delta_{p}u + g(u) | \nabla u|^{p} = h(u)f & \text{in Ω\Omega,} \newline u\geq 0 & \text{in Ω\Omega,} \newline u=0 & \text{on Ω\partial \Omega,} \ \end{cases} \end{equation*} in a domain ΩRN\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^{N} (N2)(N \geq 2), where 1p<N1\leq p<N , gg is a positive and continuous function on [0,)[0,\infty), and hh is a continuous function on [0,)[0,\infty) (possibly blowing up at the origin). We show how the presence of regularizing terms hh and gg allows to prove existence of finite energy solutions for nonnegative data ff only belonging to L1(Ω)L^1(\Omega)

    Razvoj inovativnih ploča iverica

One aim of a joint European project called DIPP (Development of Innovative Particleboard (chipboard) Panels for a better mechanical performance and a lower environmental impact) is the development of lightweight particleboards made from annual/perennial farm plants such as hemp, sunflower, topinambur, maize and miscanthus. These lightweight particleboards are intended as a possible substitution for traditional wood-based particleboards used in the furniture industry. Therefore the requirements of the EN 312 concerning the moisture-related and mechanical properties of boards for interior use have to be met. The results of research have shown that the internal bond strength of one-layer lightweight particleboards made in the experiment meets the requirements of EN 312 (type P2) and the internal bond strength of three-layer boards with topinambur in the core layer does not meet these requirement. The lightweight boards failed to meet the requirements of modulus of elasticity and bending strength.

Correlates of calcaneal quantitative ultrasound parameters in patients with diabetes: the study on the assessment of determinants of muscle and bone strength abnormalities in diabetes

OBJECTIVE: Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) provides an estimate of bone mineral density (BMD) and also evaluates bone quality, which has been related to increased fracture risk in people with diabetes. This study aimed at assessing the correlates of calcaneal QUS parameters in diabetic subjects encompassing various degrees of micro and macrovascular complications and a wide-range of peripheral nerve function. METHODS: Four hundred consecutive diabetic patients were examined by QUS to obtain values of broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA), the speed of sound (SOS), quantitative ultrasound index (QUI), and BMD. RESULTS: Among surrogate measures of complications, sensory and motor nerve amplitude and heart rate response to cough test and standing correlated with QUS parameters at univariate analysis, together with age, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, lipid profile, and renal function. Multivariate analysis revealed that BUA, SOS, QUI, and BMD were independently associated with age, male gender, hemoglobin A1c, BMI (or fat, but not fat-free mass), and somatic and autonomic nerve function parameters. CONCLUSIONS: These data indicate that peripheral nerve dysfunction is associated with worse QUS parameters, possibly contributing to increased fracture risk in diabetes. The positive relation of QUS measures with adiposity needs further investigation. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT01600924)
